John Vogel
Born in Houston, Vogel began competitive swimming in 1961 for the Shamrock Hilton Swim Club. As an age group swimmer, he won many TAGS championships, set several state records and helped his teams win championships each year he competed. His team at Memorial High School won four straight UIL state titles. Vogel was then a four-year letterman at the University of Tennessee. Returning to Texas in 1978 he started his coaching career at Meyerland Aquatic Club, moving to Space City Aquatics and then the last 18 years with The Woodlands Swim Team. His teams never lost a US dual meet and won 26 TAGS Team Championships and eight Jr. National Team Championships. A year before retiring, he also coached McCullough High School to the UIL boys state title. He was voted district, regional and state coach of the year. Vogel’s involvement with swimming continued through owning and operating The Swim Shops of the Southwest and directing the last 18 TISCA coaching clinics. Vogel has two children (Randi and Jake). He and his wife Gail live in Houston.
